TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (320) 16 November : Proverbs 18v14 / 1 Kings 2v13-3v28 / Psalm 74v13-18

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on
Understanding to grow in
Two things to rejoice in with Christ. First, is his justice. It is foreshadowed here by Solomon. Justice that had been delayed is finally delivered, enabling the kingdom to be established without those who might undermine it (2v46). Likewise, Christ will reign until all his enemies are put "under his feet." With them removed, his kingdom will be secured for our enjoyment (1 Cor 15v22-28). But there is warning too. In the end, justice will come to the unrepentant for every act of evil. The delay is not a sign of God forgetting it, but of his patience (Rom 2v4-5). Here we must recognize that Adonijah's request was an attempt as older brother to be aligned with David's comforter and so increase his claim to the throne (2v22, 1v3-4). He was opposing God's king. Second, we can rejoice in Christ's wisdom. To be wise is to know and fear God. It is worth more than all else, for all else flows from it. And in God's king, it ensures that his justice is just, his commands good, and his purposes right. Now one even wiser than Solomon is here, we are wise only so far as we listen to and obey him (Lk 11v11). As you read note Solomon's qualities.
1 Kings 2:13-3:28

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
