TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (325) 21 November : Proverbs 18v17 / 1 Kings 8 / Psalm 75v6-10

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on
Understanding to grow in
The cloud of God's presence is now seen to fill the temple. It is hugely significant, marking this as a highpoint in Israel's life. As Solomon says: "Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave." It's an encouragement to us as we await the fulfilment of all he has promised us in Christ. But we also learn something here of what's God's presence should mean: It is a joyful thing, seen in the innumerable fellowship offerings sacrificed as a sign of devotion. And it is a needed thing, as the temple is God's outpost on earth. So prayers directed to it are heard in heaven, just as those we direct to Christ and offer in the church. This emphasis on prayer should challenge us as it implies prayer to be one of the key priviledges and expectations of those with whom God is present. Solomon sees the life of Israel as wholly dependent on calling on the LORD, whether for forgiveness, help, or obedient hearts. When Jesus promised to be with us always (Matt 28v20), he therefore meant, amongst other things, that he and his Father are always present to help if we would only call upon them. As you read note the different things the people are to pray for.
1 Kings 8

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
