TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (584) 8 August : Proverbs 27v12 / Daniel 4 / Psalm 119v45-48

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on
Understanding to grow in
It's a dream to humble anyone, but especially those who rule. Their power and authority has been given them by God who alone is the sovereign ruler "over all kingdoms on earth" (4v25). And so when Nebuchadnezzar glories in himself as if the achievements of Babylon were not by divine gift, he is humbled. Becoming insane and animalistic is hugely significant, as ruling over creation is a key thing that sets humanity apart as made in the image of God (Gen 1v26-28). Arrogant and abusive rule is to be beast-like, whereas humble and righteous rule is to be God-like and so truly human. One cannot therefore think of Christ as the perfect man and king, who never glories in himself but seeks the glory of his Father and the good of his subjects. Indeed, the only reason he ever wants to be glorified is so that it would in turn glorify his Father whom he represents and serves (John 17v1, 1 Cor 15v27-28). It's an attitude all should adopt. But the further lesson of Nebuchnezzar's dream is one of history. Nations, empires and rulers come and go according to God's will and purpose, for "he does as he pleases with all the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth" (4v35). This should comfort us when we worry about our times or grieve over suffering. The Lord knows what he is doing. As you read note how Nebechadnezzar learns his lesson.
Daniel 4

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
