TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (598) 22 August : Proverbs 27v23-27 / Mark 4v1-34 / Psalm 119v93-96

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on
Proverbs 27:23-27

Understanding to grow in
"Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother" (3v35). That's the context to today's reading. They are those who prove good soil. The seed of Christ's teaching is not snatched away, or given up on because of trouble, persecution, worry or wealth. Rather it bears fruit in obedience because God has given the hearer eyes to see and ears to hear. We should therefore consider the message that is made known to us carefully, as we will be judged on our response. And we should recognize the kingdom of God is all about growing a good crop through the word in readiness for the harvest on the last day.  Indeed, through that word, the kingdom spreads like a tree that people can find shelter and rest in. As you read, consider your own response to God's word.
Mark 4:1-34

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
