TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (617) 10 September : Proverbs 28v13 / Mark 14v1-31 / Psalm 119v161-164

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on
Proverbs 28:13

Understanding to grow in
The hostility of the Jewish leaders now comes to a head. Contrast their scheming with the devotion of the woman with perfume. And then contrast her readiness to sacrifice materially for Jesus with Judas' readiness to betray him for money. What love for Christ looks like is obvious: giving our all. Of course what happens next proves how worthy Jesus is of our all. He times the last supper to show he is the fulfilment of the passover - he is the lamb to be sacrificed in the place of his people so that God's judgment passes over them. By the means of his broken body and shed blood, his followers will come to drink with him in his kingdom. Yet, there is warning here that with his death looming, Judas will betray him, the disciples will scatter, and Peter will deny him three times. Following Jesus and benefitting from all he gives can be costly. But we must stick with him nevertheless. As you read note the different responses.
Mark 14:1-31

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
