TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (630) 23 September : Proverbs 28v22 / 1 Chronicles 14-15 / Psalm 124v1-5

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on
Proverbs 28:22

Understanding to grow in
Chapter 14 displays what it means for God to be for his anointed king? First, it means they receive tribute from the nations. Just as the king of Tyre gave to David, those of all nations do to Christ. Second, God blesses him with a dynasty (14v4-7). We are those who reign with Jesus. Third, because God fights for his king he will defeat his enemies according to his word (14v8-11). And so all that opposes Christ will be put under his feet and judged, with the final enemy defeated being death (1 Cor 15v25-26). Finally, all will come to fear him (14v17). Chapter 15 displays what it means for the king to be for God? David isn't perfect. Surely he should have prioritised the ark before his palace. But he honours God by preparing a place for it. And he ensures it is treated according to God's instructions in the law (15v15). Most significant, however, is that he dances and celebrates before it (15v29). This was no mere ritual. David loved and rejoiced in his God, just as Christ does supremely. And we rejoice with Christ, for God is present with us by his Spirit, ensuring we are blessed through Jesus and kept safe and secure. As you read note how these things benefit God's people.

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
