TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? "Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Wisdom to chew on

Understanding to grow in
Our only hope in the light of God's holiness is his grace. It's seen here in heeding Moses and promising to go with Israel after all - something essential if the people are to take Canaan and be set-apart from the nations. It is seen in the LORD's declaration that he will show mercy and compassion to whom he wills - which presumes we are utterly dependent on this sovereign choice for any blessing. It is seen in his willingness to re-write the tablets containing the Ten Commandments and so give Israel another chance at the covenant. And it is seen in his revelation of his "glory" which is the display of his character as one who must punish, yes, but who leans more towards patience and forgiveness (34v6-7). It is in the light of this grace that Israel are called to turn from false gods and remember the LORD in her festivals. But the passage ends with a description of how Moses would leave God's presence with a face radiant with his glory, that he would then veil in order to hide its fading. Paul contrasts this with the new covenant in Christ. The glory of God seen in his face will never fade, and by grace God brings us to see and be transformed by it (2 Cor 3v11-4v6). How thankful we should be. As you read note what God reveals about himself.
Exodus 33:7-34:35

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
