TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (219) 7 August : Proverbs 15v26 / Songs 4-5 / Psalm 51v14-17

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on

We should not forget this book is first and foremost a celebration of sexual desire consummated in marriage. For those who are married it encourages us to meditate on the beauty of our spouse, to declare to them our delight in them, and to enjoy giving ourselves sexually to them. This is as much a part of Christian living for us as anything else is. Adam declared his delight in Eve as God made her for him, and it is God who has joined us to our spouse in marriage (Gen 2v23, Mal 2v14-15). But whether married or not, all can contemplate here the sort of delight the Lord has in his church - and the delight we can find in him as we meditate on his beauty and excellence. As you read note how fixated this poem implies we should be on the the Lord (Phil 3v8).
Song of Solomon 4-5

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
