TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (242) 30 August : Proverbs 16v11 / Joshua 8v30-10v28 / Psalm 57v4-8

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on

Understanding to grow in
It's one thing to obey the Lord, but quite another to actually walk with him. Israel commit to obedience but fail to enquire of God when the Gibeonites seek a treaty. And so they agree a peace with those they should have driven out of the land. It's a reminder that God's people are not just to live rightly, but relate to him in prayer, and seek his wisdom in the scriptures wherever it is needed. Consider Christ choosing his disciples. Yet there is a lesson about faithfulness here too. Though a bad decision, having made the treaty Israel keep to it. Whether marriage, formal agreements or general promises, the believer keeps them so far as they are not requiring them to sin. Here the LORD helps them do so, doing battle with hail and a delayed sunset so that Israel can defeat the enemies of their new allies. As you read note what we learn about the LORD.
Joshua 8:30-10:28

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
