TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (276) 3 October : Proverbs 17v8 / 1 Samuel 16v14-17v58 / Psalm 66v5-7

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on
Understanding to grow in
We all need God's man. We see it first with Saul. God uses only David to calm him when tormented by the evil spirit. It's a small scale of what David does for the nation. Goliath torments them, and God uses David to defeat him. But it is all of God. David has neither armour or sword - only faith. He is motivated by godly provocation that Goliath is defying God's armies and so dishonouring God; and he trusts God to give him victory. It's one of the clearest ways David patterns Christ. For the honour of his Father and the good of his people, he waged war against the Goliath of sin, death, the devil and hell. And just as David's victory was counted as Israel's, just as they enjoyed the spoils of what he achieved, so with Christ's victory. Israel did nothing for their salvation and we do nothing. We simply benefit from what God's king has done for us. As you read note how David acts like Christ.
1 Samuel 16:14-17:58

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
