TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (326) 22 November : Proverbs 18v18 / 1 Kings 9-10 / Psalm 76v1-5

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on
Understanding to grow in
As in Eden, life's always been about loving obedience. As God reiterates his promise to Solomon yet again, he reminds him that the success of his reign and that of his descendents depends on it. And as Solomon is honouring the Lord all continues well. God hears his prayer and promises to be present. The king excels in wisdom and wealth. And the Queen of Sheba praises God for this, noting his love in granting Israel such a king. How much more an expression of God's love for us, that he has given us his own perfectly righteous Son. How happy this makes and will make us (as 10v8). But there are hints here that things are not all rosy. Deuteronomy 17v14-20 commands kings not to aquire too many horses, cause Israelites to return to Egypt, accumulate wives and riches, or consider themselves above their subjects. The reason is that these things will go to the king's head and make him more likely to forget the Lord. But Solomon seems to contravene these commands, honouring himself with his palace and throne. It's tomorrow that we will see where it leads. Today, we heed the warning of how money, sex and power can still corrupt. As you read note the signs of Solomon's greatness.
1 Kings 9-10

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
