TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (332) 28 November : Proverbs 18v23 / 1 Kings 15v33-17v24 / Psalm 76v11-12

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on
Understanding to grow in
Like father like son. There are lessons here about the need to turn from the wrong practices of our parents rather than continue in them. The focus is on kings of the northern kingdom now called "Israel." The history leads us to the line of Omni who establishes the city of Samaria as the northern capital, and then to Ahab his evil son. Above all we see the seriousness of promoting false worship, and how it impacts one's children by leading them astray too. We are also warned against leaders who might lead us this way. It is in the context of worshipping false gods that Elijah announces a drought, proving that the LORD not Baal (the storm god) controls the weather. What follows shows that he is well able to provide food, water and life itself, for those who are faithful. He controls not just ravens, but the very elements of creation to do so. One cannot but think of Christ's reassurance for us not to worry as the Lord can feed and clothe us. We must look to him in our need, and to him alone for life in the world to come. As you read note how the Lord shows himself the true God.
1 Kings 15:33-17:24

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
