(409) 14 February : Proverbs 20v28 / Matthew 16v13-17v23 / Psalm 89v38-46

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Peter grasped the foundational truth of all Christianity, that Jesus was the "Messiah, the Son of the living God." But for the Messiah to be destined for rejection and death was a complete shock to him. Nevertheless, the lesson needs to be learnt by every disciple. The way of Christ is the way of the cross. So, just as John the Baptist was ready to pay the highest price for his faithfulness, every Christians must be ready to also. The encouragement in this, is that they will be rewarded when Christ returns. And the proof they must be willing, is the transfiguration, in which God the Father himself tells us to listen to Jesus, and the Old Tesatament's top two spokesmen do just that. The glorified state on the mountain, witnessed by Peter, James and John, is surely a window on the future kingdom that those who follow the way of Christ will inherit. It's the greatest encouragement to serve and obey him whatever the cost. As you read note what that can mean.
Matthew 16:13-17:23

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.

Understanding to grow in If you've broken your leg and want to cross the room, setting out and focusing on the far wall won't help. It will just highlight your injury. Instead your need is for a companion to lean on. This is Paul's point today. Focusing on the system of Old Testament laws won't make the Christian godly. They will just show how unable to live by God's standards we are because of sin. Rather, we need to lean on the Spirit, thinking on his desires at work within us, and then acting on them. And what reassurance for those who do. They prove they are children of God and so will one day be raised to rule over a renewed creation with all God's people, giving perspective to what…

Wisdom to chew on Proverbs 14:12
Understanding to grow in We've already seen that the Levites (of which the priests were a part) were not assigned a specific section of the land. Instead they are given forty eight towns dispersed amongst the tribal areas so that everyone could be taught God’s law and reminded of his presence. Likewise, every church needs preachers. So Paul commanded Titus to appoint elders in “every town” (Tit 1v5). Six of the Israelite towns were to be cities of refuge for those in danger of revenge for manslaughter. Even if an accident, they must live there until the high priest dies because all taking of life warrants a life in return (35v33, Gen 6v9). Once again the penalty depends on whether the sin is intentional or …

Wisdom to chew on Proverbs 19:25

Understanding to grow in It's very easy to be made to feel spiritually lacking as a Christian. Even within the church, people can imply we lack some key insight from outside scripture, that we could gain a greater level of assurance or of victory over sin if we only follow certain rules, or that a deeper experience of God can be ours if we only worship a certain way. This was the case for those Paul wrote this letter to, around AD60. And this draw to something more was leading his hearers away from Jesus himself. Throughout Paul therefore stresses that we have all things in Christ: We "have" been transferred from the kingdom of darkness to that of light. We need nothing but Christ as he is head ove…
