TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

Jesus taught that all scripture testifies about him so that in him we might have life (John 5v39-40). King David taught that it is only by living according to God's word that we're kept on the right path (Psalm 119v9). What then could be better than reading the entire Bible? (437) 14 March : Proverbs 21v18 / Isaiah 21-22 / Psalm 95v1-5

BEGIN WITH PRAYER
"Lord open my eyes and my heart."

Read slowly so that you take in. And as you do, turn your heart to God, thanking him for the good you discover and praying his will home for you, your family, your church and the world.

Wisdom to chew on
Understanding to grow in
These four prophecies were likely given at different times before being compiled together. The one against Babylon predicts its fall under the Medes (Media) and Persians (Elam) over a century into the future (it took place in 539BC). The reason this was given, no doubt, was to encourage Judah on seeing this empire rise and oppress them, even though long after Isaiah's death - just as John's prediction of the fall of all oppressive society (for which he uses the image of "Babylon") encourages us (Rev 18). After oracles against Edom and Arabia, we also have one against Jerusalem. This would be a shock for those considering themselves the Lord's people. But his condemnation is of those who are complacent about threat against the city, holding a party when they should be repenting over their sin because only the Lord can keep them safe. This may refer to the celebrations after the Assyrian's were defeated by God (2 Kgs 19), with no acknowledgement that if there is no change of heart destruction will eventually come. When things go well for us we shouldn't assume it means the Lord is unconcerned for our sin. Rather it displays his patient kindness that is intended to lead us to repentance (Rom 2v4-6). As you read note what is promised.
Isaiah 21-22

Finish this reading by pausing to ask yourself:
1) What’s the main thing it teaches me about God or his purposes in Christ? Then praise him for this.
2) What’s the main thing it teaches me about his will for me or the world? Then pray that home.

Devotion to offer up
You could read this aloud and perhaps as a springboard to further prayer.
